Reading Comprehension & Story Retelling

Reading Comprehension & Story Retelling

Reading comprehension is an active process through which an individual relates information in the text to their own knowledge and experiences to create meaningful understanding. Reading comprehension is a skill that becomes progressively more complex during the process of reading development. Often, children with language impairment demonstrate reading comprehension deficits. Children who have trouble with reading comprehension may display difficulties in the following areas:

  • decoding of text
  •  understanding and relating relevant vocabulary
  • making predictions while reading
  •  making connections to what they already know
  •  interpreting the text (e.g. following the sequence of events, mood of the story, feelings of characters)
  • generalizing how ideas of a text may relate to future readings

A child’s ability to retell a story can provide insight into a child’s ability to understand the complete story, including the main ideas or important details of the text.
